Real Madrid files hate crime complaint against Vinicius with prosecutor’s office

Real Madrid went to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Spain for racist insults against Brazilian soccer player Vinicius Junior during the May 21 match against Valencia at Mestalla.

During the course of Spain’s La Liga matchday 35, which ended with Valencia winning 1-0, the team’s fans shouted racist and obscene insults at the Real Madrid forward, such as “monkey.”

“Real Madrid considers that such attacks also constitute a hate crime, for which reason it has filed the corresponding complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office, specifically with the Prosecutor’s Office against hate crimes and discrimination, so that the facts can be investigated and responsibilities can be clarified,” the club published.

It condemned the insults and described them as “a direct attack on the model of coexistence of our social and democratic rule of law”.

The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, commented that Spain has a racism problem and if there is a fan or a group of undesirables who insult, for example, by skin color or creed, this stains not only the whole team, the club, but the whole country.

He promised that the federation would work tirelessly so that “as soon as possible Vinícius and the rest of footballers, women, and men, who have suffered this at some point, can publicly say that it is no longer a problem in Spain.”

Rubiales called on his counterpart from the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues, to meet in Spain or Brazil to address the situation, what the RFEF is doing about it, and its resolution.

The Spanish Football League launched an investigation into the racist insults against the Brazilian during the match played on May 21 in the city of Valencia.
