Peru Goverment Issues Decree for Purchase of ICU Kits

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Executive Branch has issued an Urgency Decree that establishes extraordinary measures —in economic and financial matters— to strengthen specialized health response systems and address the emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the acquisition of at least 300 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) kits.

Urgency Decree No. 001-2021, published in the Official Gazette El Peruano, authorizes the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to acquire and deliver the equipment to improve the specialized hospital response capacity.

The Ministry of Health will enter into contracts for the acquisition of the necessary biomedical equipment with the aim of implementing Intensive Care Units (ICU) areas for COVID-19 patients across the country.

Minsa will deliver the biomedical equipment to the health sector’s entities at the proposal of the Directorate General of Health Operations.

The distribution of the goods may vary as requested by each of the executing units in Lima Metropolitan Area and regional governments.

Likewise, the regulation authorizes the Ministry of Health to approve —through ministerial resolution and if necessary — complementary measures for the better application of the provisions contained in this urgency decree.

In addition, it allows the Ministry of Health to make budgetary changes, from its institutional budget for 2021, of up to S/136.137 million (about US$37.6 million) to finance the expending items related to the acquisition of the biomedical equipment.

This urgency decree will be in force until the end of the health emergency.
