Peru announces the definitive withdrawal of its ambassador to Colombia

The Government of Peru announced on Wednesday the definitive withdrawal of its ambassador to Colombia after considering that the president of that country, Gustavo Petro, “persists in distorting” what happened last December 7 when former president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022) tried to carry out what is called a “coup d’état”.

Through a statement, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced that with the withdrawal of the Peruvian ambassador, “diplomatic relations between Peru and that country are formally at the level of chargé d’affaires”.

The institution also explained that the decision responds to “the reiterated interference and offensive expressions” of the Colombian head of state, which, it said, “have seriously deteriorated the historical relationship of friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect” between the two nations.

“Faced with this, Peru has reacted in a considered, progressive and proportional manner, by diplomatic practice and taking into consideration the close relationship that has united it with Colombia for more than 200 years,” he continued.

It should be recalled that on December 7, 2022, Castillo tried to dissolve the Congress without having a constitutional basis, which generated the Legislative proceed to dismiss him immediately and appoint in his place the current president, Dina Boluarte, who at that time was the vice-president of the country.

Faced with this situation, the Colombian president recently considered during the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit that the person who should be present at the event was the former Peruvian president, who was preliminarily detained for rebellion.

“Today he should be here, (but) they took him out; he is in prison,” Petro said at the same table where the Peruvian Foreign Minister, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, was also seated, representing Boluarte.

Instead, Gervasi responded that Castillo was not present at the summit because he “staged a coup d’état” and that, had he been there, “they would have a dictator”.

It is essential to mention that last February, the Peruvian Congress declared Petro as “persona non grata” after rejecting the Colombian president’s expressions about the Boluarte government and other State institutions such as the National Police.

Despite the tense situation, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry made today “hopes that the close and bicentennial bilateral relationship with Colombia will resume its course within the framework of mutual respect and the norms, principles, and values that govern the coexistence between States”.
