RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Mario Abdo Benítez’s government proposed maintaining the price and calmly reaching the review of Annex C of the Itaipu Treaty in 2023.

“Brazil cannot impose anything because the decisions taken in Itaipu are based on consensus; that is, a unilateral tariff cannot be set. Negotiations will not be easy because it is very important that the tariff be lowered for Brazil,” he said.

Oxilia stated that the Paraguayan team of advisors and directors who will have to negotiate with Brazil must be trusted. In view of the Paraguayan proposal, Brazil has until next month to provide a response, favorable or otherwise.

“The main thing we have are human resources, let’s trust in their capacity to negotiate, they have enough technical preparation and they know about the subject,” the energy expert said.

The engineer also said that “it is in our interest that the tariff be negotiated, to establish a current favorable condition to force Brazil to sit down to negotiate in 2023.”

PARAGUAY COMMITTED TO POLITICAL AND SOCIAL NEGOTIATION

Paraguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Euclides Acevedo said yesterday that the negotiation between Brazil and Paraguay should be based specifically on political and social issues, and not so much on the technical sector.

“If we want it to become a national cause, the Nation must understand, the majority and not an elite of privileged computer scientists who understand it as they wish, while the common people want social and economic benefits, and more than lowering the cost of electricity, what we want is quality electricity,” he said.
