RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian government announced Wednesday that Marcos Montes will take over as agriculture minister as incumbent Tereza Cristina Dias steps down to run for the Senate.

Marcos Montes is a physician, former congressman, and mayor of Uberaba (a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais). Marcos was the deputy of Tereza Cristina Dias in that ministry. He will now assume the post of Minister of Agriculture on Thursday.

Tereza Cristina Dias had headed the ministry since January 2019, when President Jair Bolsonaro took office. She will now run for the Mato Grosso do Sul state Senate in October elections.

In Brazil, incumbents must resign from office before elections if they want to run for another office.
