MAPFRE Posts 9.5% Profit Growth in Brazil Amid Economic Pressures

MAPFRE, the global insurance giant, reported a 9.5% increase in net profit in Brazil for 2024, totaling €255.1 million.

This growth came despite a 6.5% decline in total premiums to €4.8 billion in euro terms, driven by the depreciation of the Brazilian real. In local currency, premiums rose by 1.7%, reflecting the company’s ability to adapt to challenging market conditions.

The insurer saw its life insurance and property and casualty (P&C) segments grow by 2.2% in local currency, even as high interest rates reduced demand for some products, particularly agricultural insurance.

Falling commodity prices further pressured the agricultural sector, but MAPFRE managed to improve its return on equity (ROE) in Brazil from 24.3% to 25.9%. This showcases the company’s operational efficiency and profitability.

Natural disasters significantly impacted MAPFRE’s operations in Brazil. Floods in Rio Grande do Sul between April and May 2024 ranked among the year’s most severe catastrophic events, costing the company €82 million.

Despite these challenges, Brazil remained a key contributor to MAPFRE’s overall success. Globally, MAPFRE achieved record-breaking results in 2024, with net profits surging 30% to €902 million and premiums growing 4.5% to €28.1 billion (6.6% at constant exchange rates).

Revenue reached €33.2 billion, while the non-life combined ratio improved to 94.4%, reflecting enhanced underwriting performance. Latin America continued to drive MAPFRE’s global earnings, contributing €408 million in net profit. Brazil played a pivotal role, despite facing currency headwinds.

MAPFRE Chairman Antonio Huertas credited the company’s focus on technical excellence and strategic execution for these results. He called them the best in the company’s history.
