Lula Meets Lavrov: Strengthening Brazil-Russia Ties

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Brasilia at the Palacio de la Alvorada.

The meeting, happening Thursday and initiated by Lavrov, coincided with his attendance at the G20 foreign ministers’ gathering, the presidential office reported.

Lavrov engaged in talks with Lula on mutual interests, G20 topics, and worldwide concerns.

He commended Lula for the successful organization of the foreign ministers’ event in Rio and relayed Putin’s endorsement of Brazil’s leadership in the G20.

Lavrov invites Lula to October’s BRICS Summit, backing Brazil’s UN Security Council seat aspiration.

Lula thanked Putin for his backing and confirmed his BRICS Summit visit.

He stressed the importance of global governance reform to tackle issues like artificial intelligence and climate change collectively.

Lula spotlighted cooperation with other nations harboring tropical forests to fight deforestation and seek fair compensation for preserving these ecosystems.

He underscored the need for better financial support mechanisms for developing countries. Lula highlights 2023 peak in Brazil-Russia trade, aiming to expand bilateral relationship.

In addition, Lavrov presented Russia’s perspective on Ukraine, with Lula reiterating Brazil’s readiness to aid peace initiatives.

Furthermore, Lula discussed bilateral and worldwide matters, the Middle East conflict, and Gaza’s situation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday.
