In an unprecedented act since redemocratization, the commander of the Brazilian Navy misses the change of leadership

In a ceremony held by the Brazilian Ministry of Defense that took place this Thursday, the 5th, former commander Almir Garnier Santos chose not to attend the site to participate in the traditional change of command of the Force.

This is because Marcos Sampaio Olsen had already said that he was appointed to the position on an interim basis by the new minister José Múcio Monteiro.

The decision not to honor the new commander of the Navy by the current server occurs in an unprecedented way in history since redemocratization.

In the change of command of the Army and Air Force, General Freire Gomes and Brigadier Baptista Junior – appointed by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) -, honored the inauguration of those appointed by the new president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Although he positively signaled to the Navy that there would be a transition of power, Almir Garnier remained resistant to talking to the PT’s team and was the only one not to meet with Múcio during the government transition.

Almir, however, left a text to be read at the ceremony. “During the fruitful command, I dedicated special attention to the questions that I always asked, essential for the motivation of our people, trying to emphasize the moral values of the heroic deeds of our predecessors. [I have] complete confidence that the loyal and disciplined Navy of Tamandaré will know how to obey its guidelines in favor of the sovereignty of our nation,” punctuated Garnier in a non-face-to-face manner.
