Foreign tourist arrivals in Mexico by air grew 23.4% in first two months of the year

Mexico received 3.74 million international tourists by air during the first two months of the year, an increase of 23.4 percent compared to the same period last year and 9.7 percent more than what was recorded in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, informed this Sunday the head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), Miguel Torruco.

The Mexican official explained through a statement that some 2.84 million tourists entered through direct flights from the United States, Canada, and Colombia, 24.3 percent more compared to January and February 2022.

Torruco said that 903,371 tourists of all other nationalities were recorded, up 20.8 percent over the previous year and representing a market share of 24.2 percent.

The main entry places were Mexico City and the resorts of Puerto Vallarta (west) and Cancun (Caribbean), which also recorded an increase of 5.2 percentage points.

The Mexican Government expects the country to consolidate its position as a “tourist power” this year, relying on a significant increase in foreign visitors and higher foreign exchange earnings.

According to official estimates, the Latin American country will reach 31.169 billion dollars in revenues from international tourists by 2023, which would represent an increase of 11.3 percent in 2022 and 26.8 percent in 2019.
