Mexico hands over drug trafficker ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s security chief to the US

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has handed over to US authorities Jorge Iván Gastelum Ávila, ‘El Cholo Iván’, considered the head of security and hitmen for Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán.

The Federal District Court of the District of Columbia had requested Gastelum Avila’s extradition for the crimes of criminal association against health and using, brandishing, and discharging a firearm.

According to the Mexican newspaper ‘Milenio’, the surrender occurred at Mexico City’s International Airport.

The US investigation considers that the suspect was the one who ordered the killing of rival cartel members and confronted security forces.

He was in charge of a group of 200 gunmen responsible for El Chapo’s protection and the security of drug shipment routes to the United States.

Jorge Ivan “carried out El Chapo’s will, which often included assassinations that were ordered and violent attacks against rival cartels and Mexican law enforcement authorities,” according to the investigation.
