Fans Hide Sponsor Logo in Palmeiras Game to Protest President

At Allianz Parque, fans of the Palmeiras soccer team took a unique approach to protest against the club’s President, Leila Pereira.

Before a match with Atlético-MG, these fans unveiled a large team jersey. On it, they had hidden the logos of Crefisa and FAM, two companies owned by Pereira.

The fans made their feelings known through chanting as well. They aimed their chants not only at Pereira but also at Anderson Barros, the club’s Football Director.

Specifically, they demanded new players for the team managed by Abel Ferreira.

This tension had been simmering for a while. It reached a peak when Palmeiras lost in the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores against Boca Juniors.

After that loss, fans became more vocal. They called for changes to the squad and for Barros to step down.

Earlier in the week, some fans took their protest further. They spray-painted messages on the headquarters of Crefisa.

Phrases like “We want players” and “Weak leadership” appeared on the walls.

In response, President Pereira defended her management of the team. Under her leadership, the club won five titles.

These included two Paulista Championships, a Recopa Sul-Americana, a Brasileiro, and a Supercopa do Brasil. She highlighted these successes as proof of competent leadership.

Pereira also questioned the loyalty of the protesting fans. She said true fans would not attack a sponsor like Crefisa.

She noted that Crefisa and FAM had been consistent in their support, even during tough times. For example, during the pandemic, these companies did not cut their funding.

This support helped the club keep all its workers employed. To sum up, the club’s management and its organized fans are at odds.

While the fans demand change, Pereira stands firm, highlighting her successful record. Neither side shows signs of backing down, making for a tense atmosphere both on and off the field.
