Ex-President of Uruguay Calls for Freeing Lula, Says Brazil is Undergoing “a Disaster”
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Governed by the left-wing and yet economically successful, safe and prosperous, Uruguay is not happy with what is happening in Brazil. Only a few days after the Uruguayan defense minister’s sharp criticism of the current Brazilian democracy, it was now the iconic former president José Mujica who expressed his lack of understanding of the neighboring country.
At the age of 84, former Uruguayan President José Pepe Mujica said Brazil is going through a “disaster” and has defended former President Lula’s freedom.

“How can a president, who has pulled over 30 million people out of poverty, be imprisoned like this? What we see is that there is political persecution that is poisoning everyone in Latin America,” he said, also in reference also to the attempted arrests of former President Cristina Kirchner of Argentina and former President Rafael Correa of Ecuador. The interview was given to journalist Ari Lijalad of El Destape.
Mujica received a Lula Livre T-shirt sent by former senator Lindbergh Farias (PT). According to the former revolutionary leader, there is a renovation of the state coup mechanisms promoted by capitalism.
“They are replacing the old coups with sweeter versions, but they are coups nonetheless, and it is logical that they do. We should not expect anything else from capitalism, which is actually the true father of corruption. It wants people to buy what they don’t even need to live happily. This system always spreads the notion that to be successful in life is to have much more than is necessary and its motto is that to be successful, you have to be rich,” the Uruguayan declared.
When pointing out the “disasters” in Brazil, Mujica mentioned the deforestation and fires in the Amazon Forest, which have gained worldwide resonance. “They burn a forest for money and are not even worried about what is happening on the planet. What is being done with the environment is very serious, it will not last forever,” he said.
