Ecuador: Lasso is confident that Congress will not choose to remove him from office

It is expected that by the beginning of May, a session in the National Assembly of Ecuador will be held to debate and vote on the possible green light to impeach the country’s president, Guillermo Lasso, in the middle of a political trial against him for alleged embezzlement.

The trial is currently in the phase of presentation of evidence and calling of witnesses for a case that dates back to 2020 in which Lasso, who was not yet head of state, announced a contract signed between the company Amazonas Tanker and the Ecuadorian Oil Fleet, to the detriment of the nation’s interests.

However, the Ecuadorian president has shown himself optimistic in a recent interview with Argentinean journalist Andres Oppenheimer, indicating that he is confident that the opposition does not have the necessary votes to remove him from office.

For Lasso to end up out of the presidency, 92 out of 137 votes within the Legislative are required.

“I have to defend myself, defend my honor.”

“I have not committed embezzlement, I have to tell all assembly members in the Assembly, and after that, I will make the decision I consider most appropriate for Ecuador because we have to ensure stability,” said the president in that public appearance.
