Decoding the costs and trends of weddings in Brazil: an insightful research

As dreamlike as weddings are, they often come tethered with significant financial considerations, typically defined by the size of one’s bank balance.

According to a survey conducted across 15 nations, the mean expenditure on a wedding in Brazil is approximately R$44 thousand (US$9 thousand).

Notably, almost half of this sum is allocated towards venue hire and the services of a buffet or caterer.

The Global Weddings Report 2023, a joint initiative by The Knot, Hitched, Casamentos.com.br, and associated platforms, collates data from 25,245 individuals married between December 2022 and February 2023, including 1,261 Brazilians.

Here are the salient findings from this study.

Major Expenditures

In Brazil, the average wedding hosts around 125 guests, costing about R$44,000 (US$90,000).

In contrast, a typical American wedding caters to roughly 117 guests but costs an average of R$147,200 (US$30,000).

Of the total Brazilian wedding expenditure, 27.3% is dedicated to the buffet and catering services, 20.6% to venue hire, 13.5% to decoration, and nearly 11.8% to photography and videography.

Moreover, almost 10% is spent on the bridal couple’s attire, 7.2% on music, 5.8% on flowers, and roughly 3.7% on jewelry.

The average costs mentioned do not factor in an engagement ring or honeymoon expenses.

Typically, Brazilian weddings involve at least 10 service providers, encompassing a variety of professionals and businesses.

Approximately 93% of couples engage a photography team, 84% utilize beauty and make-up services, and 82% invest in catering, wedding attire, and decor.

Rising Popularity of Destination Weddings

The recent trend of destination weddings has been steadily gaining traction. In the past three years, there has been a 23% increase in demand for wedding planners, professionals deemed essential for organizing distant weddings.

While international destination weddings are possible, Brazilian couples prefer national destinations.

Seaside locations are the favored choice for 62% of couples opting for destination weddings, with Bahia’s Trancoso and Arraial d’Ajuda being the top picks.

The average cost of a destination wedding, catering to 125 guests, is around R$ 44,000.

Wedding size can vary significantly, from intimate ceremonies with just ten people to grand celebrations with up to 350 guests, influencing the total cost.

Other factors that may be borne by the couple, such as guest transportation and accommodation, site infrastructure, and musical arrangements, can further impact the budget.

Interestingly, only 1% of respondents chose to combine their wedding and honeymoon at the same location.

Honeymoon Trends

The study reveals that most couples (85%) prioritize their honeymoon, with about half setting off immediately after the wedding.

Of these, 70% choose domestic travel destinations, while the remainder opts for international locales, including Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States.

In the post-pandemic world, lesser-known destinations are becoming increasingly popular for their privacy and uniqueness.

Among these are Chile and Peru in Latin America, African safaris, and destinations such as Vietnam, Mauritius, the Maldives, and Bali.

Wedding Months and Preferences

November is the most popular month for weddings in Brazil, preferred by 12% of respondents. With no extreme temperature variations in Brazil, unlike the U.S., weddings are fairly evenly distributed throughout the year.

October, December, and April are the next favored months, each with 11% of weddings. The months least preferred are January, February, and August, largely due to vacations, Carnival celebrations, and the annual tax season.

Wedding Trends

Based on data from Casamentos.com.br, some notable trends in weddings include weekday weddings, the return of large post-pandemic celebrations, maximalist mixing of styles, social media-oriented planning, informal and colorful decoration schemes, preference for digital payments instead of traditional gift lists, and support for local suppliers, particularly for destination weddings.

These trends reflect the changing dynamics of wedding celebrations in Brazil.
