Census reveals that Argentina exceeds 47 million inhabitants

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On May 19, Argentina learned the National Census 2022 results, which showed the existence of 47,327,407 inhabitants in the country, although some citizens denounced not being included in the survey.

“We are more than 47 million Argentines! Today, thanks to the effort of all of us, we have more certainty of working for a better future,” said the Argentine President, Alberto Fernández.

However, the census informed that these are previous results that should be interpreted as a population trend since some people were not included in the count.

“Between May 19 and 24, as foreseen in all censuses, the recovery stage will be carried out so that no one is left uncounted,” informed the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec).

For this purpose, 18,000 census takers will visit the homes not included in the census carried out last May 18, when the count took place. The demographic operation was supervised by organizations such as CELAC and other statistical entities from Uruguay, Peru, and Ecuador.

This census includes new features such as digital registration and the residence declaration where citizens spend the most time and not the one where they spent the previous night, as required in the 2010 count.

Alberto Fernández stated that “the Indec was able to take a picture of Argentina that will be very useful for us to know how to face the future”.

With 61 questions, the survey delves into issues related to indigenous or Afro-descendant self-recognition, physical or mental disabilities, and details related to sex and gender identity.

The public agency will announce, in three months, the preliminary basic results of the census; in eight months, the expanded basic results; and in 13 months, the definitive results.

The recently declared results show a growth of 7,210,311 inhabitants compared to the last census conducted in 2010. The preliminary data will be released in three months, while the final data will be released in 13 months.
