Census 2022: how many inhabitants are there in Argentina?

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The last national census carried out in 2010 established that 40,117,096 inhabitants lived in Argentina, 3,856,966 more than the 2001 record. But, what number will the survey for next Wednesday, May 18, show?

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), the estimated population as of July 1 this year is 46,234,830, of which 22,709,478 are men and 23,525,352 are women. An estimated 3,081,550 people live in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), while 17,875,743 people from Buenos Aires do so in the Province of Buenos Aires.

Law 17,622 established that the Census must be carried out every 10 years since 1970, something that was modified over time. The last one was on October 27, 2010 (the day that former President Néstor Kirchner died) and in Argentina there were already 40,117,096 inhabitants and 13,812,125 private homes.

Now, with this new survey, you can choose between two alternatives to upload the data: through the physical interview or digitally. This is a new tool that allows you to complete the questionnaire online. That is, the population can answer the questions from a computer, tablet or cell phone with Internet access in advance.

Those who do not choose the virtual modality must receive the census taker in charge of taking their data on Wednesday, May 18, declared a national holiday through decree 42/2022.

THE FIRST CENSUS IN HISTORY

The first census in history, carried out in 1869 under the presidency of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, gave a total number of 1,877,490 inhabitants and 262,433 houses.

The 1,877,490 people registered included the National Army that intervened in the War of the Triple Alliance and Argentines abroad. The population of Chaco, Chubut (except the Welsh Colony), Formosa, La Pampa, Misiones, Neuquén, Río Negro, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego was not censused but estimated, since these provinces were not under the control of the national State. A census of dwellings was not carried out, but only of population.
