Brazil’s Supreme Court STF restricts individual decisions by Justices as Moraes

In an executive session closed to the public, the justices of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) decided that urgent individual decisions must be submitted immediately for judgment by the other members.

It must be submitted to avoid severe damage or to guarantee the effectiveness of a previous decision.

For example, in the case of arrests, the analysis must be made in face-to-face trials.

The decisions were made in an executive session in the virtual plenary and will be published in January.

The Court also established 90 working days to adapt old cases to the new rules.

Thus, individual determinations made in the past that a panel has not analyzed must be judged.

This decision by the STF is of great significance since Alexandre de Moraes, as de facto censorship czar, has decided most of his controversial findings in autocracy single-handedly since the elections.

This decision by the STF is interpreted in Brazil as a curtailment of Moraes’ abuse of power.
