RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A day after Russia recognized the Donetsk and Lugansk republics in eastern Ukraine as sovereign states, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry called on the parties involved to avoid an “escalation of violence” in Ukraine.

In a statement, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry appealed “to all parties involved to avoid an escalation of violence and to establish, as soon as possible, channels of dialogue that will allow for a peaceful resolution of the situation on the ground.”

The ministry adds that given the situation that has arisen around the status of Donetsk and Luhansk, Brazil reiterates the need to seek a negotiated solution based on the Minsk agreements

The country demands that this solution take into account “the legitimate security interests of Russia and Ukraine” and the need to respect the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Last week, President Jair Bolsonaro traveled to Moscow for an official visit. In a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, he reiterated that Brazil was “in solidarity” with Russia, without elaborating on what he was referring to.

Bolsonaro added that Brazil supports all countries seeking peace and hopes for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the current conflict.
