RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From January to December 2021, the Uruguayan leather industry raised its leather and fur shipments to Brazil to triple digits, compared to the total accumulated in 2020, thus becoming the largest Latin American supplier of the sector to the Brazilian market for the fourth consecutive year and displacing to third and fourth place respectively its direct competitors in the region: Argentina and Paraguay.

The latest import report of the Center of Brazilian Tanning Industries (CICB) indicates that between January and December 2021, Uruguay exported US$19.7 million in leather and fur to Brazil, an amount 249.8% higher than the total recorded in the same period of the previous year.

In addition, according to the CICB, Uruguay went from exporting 387,883 square meters of leather and fur during 2020 to a total of 985,762 square meters in the 12 months of 2021, which means an accelerated increase of 154.1%.

In the analysis by volume, the figures are equally positive but much more discreet. Uruguay shipped 18.9 million kilograms of leather to Brazil, representing a 12.7% increase compared to 2020.

These results are in line with the excellent performance of the Uruguayan leather and fur industry during the previous year in terms of exports. In 2021, Uruguay shipped US$151 million in global shipments, an increase of 63% compared to 2020.
