Bird flu: Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela on alert

Peru on Thursday declared a health alert for the entire national territory for 180 days due to the occurrence of highly pathogenic bird flu.

According to the authorities, around 17,500 seabirds, mainly young pelicans, have died in the South American country in the past week.

In addition, more than 3,000 cormorants and gannets, among other species, have been reported dead along the Peruvian coast.

The outbreak also affects poultry and around 37,000 chickens and laying hens have already been culled.
