RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Peruvian President Pedro Castillo’s Marxist-left Perú Libre party announced Thursday (30) it will move into opposition. The party’s leader in Congress, Waldemar Cerrón, said the party would form a “propositional opposition.”
“An opposition is not raised out of opposition or on a whim. An opposition is made up of arguments, actions, and facts that have an impact on the country,” he said.
According to Cerrón, the Peruvian president “did not conform to the ideology” of the party and therefore should leave the acronym. “The departure of the citizen and activist Pedro Castillo was not requested as president, but as an activist of the party.”
On Thursday, Pedro Castillo requested to leave Perú Libre. On his Twitter profile, he published an image of the letter.
“Today I notified @JNE_Peru of my irrevocable resignation from the Peru Libre political party. This decision is due to my responsibility as president of 33 million Peruvians. I respect the party and its base built during the electoral campaign,” he wrote.
