Mexico decides not to break relations with Peru despite the expulsion of its ambassador

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, described as arbitrary the decision of the Government of his Peruvian counterpart, Dina Boluarte, to declare a persona non grata the Mexican ambassador, Pablo Monroy Conesa.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided not to break relations, among other things, because we need to maintain our Embassy to provide protection to Mexicans who reside, work, and live in Peru. So the Embassy continues its function, a person in charge of the Embassy and we are still awaiting the events in Peru,” he announced.

The president regretted the decision made by the Boluarte government regarding the head of the Mexican diplomatic mission in Peru.

“A government that is highly questioned as a whole for its behavior, above all, or opting for repression and not seeking a way out of the conflict, through dialogue and with the democratic method of calling elections as soon as possible to avoid a situation of instability in politics,” he said.

SITUATION IN PERU

López Obrador recalled that for many years, “at least six years”, Peru has had five presidents.

“Imagine this situation. It is fundamentally due to the interests of a group that dominates and does not allow the Peruvian people to participate in public life and exercise their political rights,” he reiterated.

“The peoples seek to liberate themselves from oppression, from the oligarchies. They participate through elections, however, these oligarchies supported by the created interest groups, the powerful, the information media at the service of the regime, make it very difficult for them to government that emerged from popular democratic processes can govern. This is the case of Peru,” he continued.

The expulsion of the Mexican ambassador occurred hours after Mexico offered diplomatic asylum to the family of former president Pedro Castillo – removed on December 7 – at its Embassy in Lima.

In addition, on several occasions, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said that the Peruvian leftist leader has been the victim of harassment since he came to power and has even affirmed that his government recognizes Castillo, not Boluarte.

“[Peru makes this declaration] due to the repeated expressions of the highest authorities of that country [Mexico] about the political situation in Peru, which constitute interference in our internal affairs and, therefore, violate the principle of non-intervention,” declared Ana Gervasi Díaz, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru.

She added that the decision is based on the relevant provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
