Brazilian soccer championship 2023 has a new “invasion” of foreign coaches

The Brazilian Soccer Championship Serie A presents a new wave of foreign coaches.

More than half of the 19 clubs that start the tournament with an effective coach (Goiás is under the command of interim) have a professional from outside the country.

Brazilian clubs are once again investing in the arrival of foreign coaches.

Among them, three are left over from previous years: Abel Ferreira at Palmeiras, Juan Pablo Vojvoda at Fortaleza, and Luís Castro, at Botafogo.

Argentine Jorge Sampaoli is the most recent arrival.

He was announced by Flamengo last Friday night (14) to replace the Portuguese Vítor Pereira.

There are seven Portuguese and three Argentine coaches.

Foreigner longer working in Brazil, Abel Ferreira is the current champion of the Brazilian, with Palmeiras.

The coach has also won two editions of the Libertadores, Copa do Brasil, Recopa Sul-Americana, Supercopa do Brasil and Paulista.

Vojvoda was the champion of the Northeast Cup last year and is the three-time champion of the State Championship in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The Portuguese Ivo Vieira (Cuiabá) and Renato Paiva (Bahia) are among the newcomers.

Coudet was champion of the State Championship for Atlético-MG, but he was swayed in his position last week after controversial statements.

The new coach of Fla, Sampaoli, knows Brazilian soccer well. He has already worked at Santos and Atlético-MG.

Among the Brazilian coaches, there are several profiles.

Grêmio and São Paulo start the Brazilian Championship having idols on the edge of the pitch, such as Renato Gaúcho and Rogério Ceni, respectively.

Mano Menezes at Internacional, Odair Hellmann at Santos, and Vagner Mancini at América-MG are more established names.

Corinthians is betting on Fernando Lázaro, who had worked at the club and is effectively getting his first chance.

Fluminense kept Fernando Diniz, who won the Carioca Championship and is being speculated even in the national team.
