Thousands Protest Throughout Brazil Against Education Cuts

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Several thousand people marched through downtown Rio de Janeiro Thursday, May 30, in an attempt to get the Jair Bolsonaro government to change course on education cuts.

The Ministry of Education has already blocked R$5.7 billion ($1.43 billion) or about 23 percent of its discretionary budget.

The protest in downtown Rio was peaceful, although policing was increased following acts of vandalism at previous demonstrations.

The Bolsonaro government has come under increased pressure to balance Brazil's budget in the shadow of rising social security costs . . .
