Brazil: indigenous people act for the release of Cererê Xavante in Brasilia

A group of Xavante indigenous people is in Brasília on Thursday (25) to demand the release of the cacique José Acácio Sererê Xavante, imprisoned since December last year for allegedly inciting protests against the diplomacy of then President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB).

The indigenous people intend to hold an act in front of the Papuda Prison in solidarity with the Xavante and the others arrested during the January 8 acts and those who are free with precautionary measures, such as the use of electronic anklets.

In a note delivered to Senator Luis Carlos Heinze (PP-RS) on Thursday morning (25), the group said that Cererê was arrested for “having an opinion or criticizing the lack of transparency in the elections and the arbitrariness of the Supreme Court”, which cannot be considered a crime.

“We beg for the immediate freedom of the cacique and all the patriots who are being deprived of their liberty,” says Delfim Tsererówẽ, appointed as the leader of the movement.

The note also states that Cererê‘s health is aggravated by the risk of kidney failure, retinopathy, limb amputation, and hyper- or hypoglycemic coma, and that the defense has not been able to advance procedures to improve the indigenous man’s custody.
