Brazil elections 2022: Former Education Minister quits governor candidacy for São Paulo state

Former Minister of Education Abraham Weintraub announced on Sunday, July 31, that he would not run for the government of São Paulo state in the October elections.

During the PMB convention, the former minister said that he and his brother, Arthur Weintraub, would be candidates for federal deputy.

“I am changing my candidacy from governor to federal deputy and Arthur from senator to federal deputy as well,” he said.

Weintraub said his candidacy “was well accepted” by right-wing voters in the state but saw his candidacy being “made impossible” by what he calls the “BolsoCentrão.”

“The scam of Waldemar, Ciro Nogueira, Kassab, and Michel Temer was terrified to have a guy like me, with the same values you have, in the São Paulo state government. It would paralyze the “good business” they have been doing for decades.

“And they mobilized the base, structures, and parties to destroy us. [Today, they managed to diminish my voting intention. I don’t believe DataFolha. Other polls are giving 3%. With 3%, I won’t go to the second round. Abraham massacres in the debate, but there won’t be a debate in the first round,” declared the former minister.

According to the latest Real Time Big Data survey conducted from July 8 to 9, 2022, Weintraub appears with 2% of voting intentions, occupying 5th place in the race for state government.

Former mayor Fernando Haddad (Workers’ Party – PT) leads the race for the government of São Paulo, with 34% voting intentions in the state. Former Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republican), has 20%. He is tied, within the margin of error, with governor Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), who appears with 16%.

2ND ROUND OF VOTING

In an eventual confrontation between Haddad and Tarcísio, the PT candidate has 38% against 29% of the former Minister of Infrastructure.

Haddad would also win the 2nd round against Rodrigo Garcia. The former mayor has 38%, while the current governor has 24% of voting intentions.

There is a technical tie in a direct confrontation between Tarcisio and Garcia. The former minister has 28% against 24% of the PSDB candidate.

The survey heard 1,500 people from July 8 to 9, 2022. The margin of error is three percentage points higher or lower in a 95% confidence interval.
