Brazil elections 2022: Cape Verde’s president and PM believe in strengthening bilateral relations

The President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, and Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, said today they believe in strengthening relations with Brazil after the election of Lula da Silva.

“I congratulate Lula da Silva on his victory in the presidential elections,” both said in messages posted on their respective Facebook social network accounts.

“I hope we can work together to further strengthen the relations of friendship and cooperation between Brazil and Cape Verde,” the head of state, José Maria Neves, added in his message.

Lula da Silva, the candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT, left), was elected on Sunday as the president of Brazil with 50.9% of votes, defeating Jair Bolsonaro, who obtained 49.1%, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

“Relations between our countries will be strengthened, as well as at the CPLP [Community of Portuguese Language Countries] level, where Brazil plays a vital role,” Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva said in his congratulatory message.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 77, won more than 60.3 million votes (50.9% of the total), with a lead of more than 2.1 million over Bolsonaro, who got 58.2 million (49.1%), in Sunday’s presidential election, the TSE website indicated.

Lula da Silva has already served two terms between 2003 and 2011.

The former union leader will have Geraldo Alckmin, from the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) as vice-president, who had been his opponent in the 2006 presidential elections, then for the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB).
