Brazilian STF Justice Lewandowski tells President Lula he should anticipate retirement

By · March 29, 2023 · 2 min read

Supreme Court (STF) Justice Ricardo Lewandowski has personally advised President Lula of his decision to bring forward his retirement just after the Easter holiday.

The information was published on Wednesday (29) by g1.

By law, he can stay until May 11, when he turns 75, but he will send the letter formalizing the request for retirement by the end of this week.

The conversation with Lula, according to g1, occurred on Wednesday (22) in Recife, when the Justice of the Supreme Court ratified the agreement between the Union and Pernambuco for shared management of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

The act was held at the Palácio do Campo das Princesas, the seat of the Pernambuco government.

It was there that Lula and Lewandowski spoke privately, the portal reported.

President Lula appointed the Justice to the STF in March 2006, at the age of 57, in the last year of Lula’s first term in office.

One of Lewandowski’s last decisions was to overturn articles of State Law that prevented ministers, secretaries, and parliamentarians from taking positions on the boards of directors of public companies.

The request was made in a lawsuit filed by the PCdoB party (Communist Party of Brazil), an ally of the Lula government.

With Lewandowski’s retirement almost a month before the deadline, Lula must also anticipate the process of choosing a name for the vacancy.

There are two main names: one is Professor Manoel Carlos de Almeida Neto, who was secretary general of the presidency of the STF and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), and who is very close to Lewandowski.

According to g1, the minister told interlocutors that Almeida Neto would be “a kind of son” to him.

Another name is Lula’s lawyer, Cristiano Zanin.
