Bolivia: Áñez challenges two of the judges who convicted her last year
Former Bolivian president Jeanine Áñez filed a recusal on Thursday against two judges of a court of first instance in La Paz, claiming that they already knew about the case for which she has been sentenced to ten years in prison in the ‘Coup d’Etat II’ plot.
Specifically, the former president claimed that judges Orlando Rojas and Claudia Castro knew about her case in advance, which would compromise their impartiality, as ‘El Deber’ reported.
“I refuse to direct the appeal hearing for ‘Patraña 2’ to the judges of the Fourth Criminal Court, Orlando Rojas and Claudia Castro, who must excuse themselves for having already known the case in advance as investigating judges and having ruled against me. Enough injustice!” the former president said on the social network Twitter.
Likewise, the former Bolivian president recalled that Article 180 of the Bolivian Constitution establishes that the ordinary jurisdiction “is based on the procedural principles of suitability, honesty, legality, and due process”.
Thus, she has assured that the article’s principles have been violated by judges Rojas and Castro.
Jeanine Áñez has been in preventive prison for almost 700 days for her participation in the ‘Coup d’Etat II’ case, for which she was sentenced to 10 years in prison last June.
