On May 8, 2025, at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Medellín, Atlético Nacional defeated Internacional 3-1 in a pivotal Copa Libertadores group stage match.

This result, sourced from multiple Latin American sports reports, altered the competitive landscape of Group F, now regarded as one of the tournament’s most unpredictable groups.

Atlético Nacional, backed by a home crowd despite heavy rain, pressed Internacional from the start. The Colombian side’s strategy paid off in the 38th minute when Kevin Viveros scored after a cross from Camilo Cándido.

Internacional’s problems increased when Valencia sustained a thigh injury and left the field early, forcing a substitution that disrupted their attacking plans. Before halftime, Wesley nearly equalized for Internacional, but David Ospina made a crucial save.

Early in the second half, Atlético Nacional extended their lead. Marino Hinestroza broke through on the right and found Billy Arce unmarked in the box, who finished calmly.

The Colombian team continued to create chances, exploiting Internacional’s defensive lapses. Viveros missed a clear opportunity to score a third after a defensive error, but the pressure on Internacional remained constant.

Atlético Nacional Defeats Internacional and Reshapes Copa Libertadores Group F

Internacional attempted a late comeback. In the 79th minute, a VAR review confirmed a handball in the box, and Alan Patrick converted the penalty to reduce the deficit.

However, Atlético Nacional closed out the match in stoppage time. Viveros capitalized on a defensive mistake, dribbled past Victor Gabriel, and scored his second goal, securing the 3-1 victory.

The match statistics showed Internacional held a slight edge in possession, 52% to 48%. However, Atlético Nacional proved more efficient in front of goal, converting three of their twelve shots.

Both teams struggled with crossing accuracy, underlining the tactical focus on direct play and counterattacks.

This defeat dropped Internacional to third place in Group F with five points. Atlético Nacional climbed to second with six points, while Bahia remained at the top with seven.

Nacional of Uruguay, despite being last with four points, still has a realistic chance to qualify.

Only three points separate all four teams, making the group’s outcome highly uncertain with two rounds remaining.

Internacional now faces a critical away match against Nacional in Uruguay, while Atlético Nacional prepares to host Bahia. Both fixtures will play a decisive role in determining which clubs advance to the knockout stage.

This result also highlights the financial and strategic pressures on Brazilian clubs. With rising expenditures and increased competition, teams like Internacional must balance on-field ambitions with sustainable management.

The current scenario in Group F reflects the broader volatility and risk that clubs face in South American football, where a single result can reshape both sporting and financial prospects.
