Argentina to allow beef exports next week

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Minister of Productive Development of Argentina, Matias Kulfas, has announced that next week Argentina will allow beef exports, suspended since last May 18, in order to curb the advance of inflation in these products.

“Next week we will resume the path of beef exports,” said Kulfas, who predicted that the government will present a new scheme for Argentine exports in the coming hours.

In May, the government ordered the suspension of beef exports for 30 days to curb the sharp increase in prices for the product in recent months.

Between April 2020 and April 2021, the price of beef has registered a growth of 65.3%, according to the latest report of the Institute for the Promotion of Argentine Beef (Ipcva), which is a higher level than the cumulative inflation in a year (46.3%).

“The idea is that through the new regulation of the rules of the game that we finish drafting, be able from next week to resume the path of export, trying to ensure the meat on the table of Argentines. We want all the popular cuts to be available at affordable prices,” Kulfas stressed to Argentine radio El Destape.

Three tons of meat per year

In this sense, the minister said that to lift the suspension of the executive has held several meetings with sectors of production and export of meat. He also recalled that the goal of the South American country is to exceed the barrier of three million tons of meat produced per year.

“If we could reach a level of five million, which is our main goal, we could guarantee three million tons for the domestic market, which would allow us to meet consumption, and at the same time we could export two million tons, which would be double what we exported last year,” Kulfas said.

Finally, the minister noted that the goal within the sector is that there is a greater supply of the domestic market. So the idea is to be able to export again, but with a scheme that ensures a greater presence of meat in the domestic market.
