American Airlines resumes operations with Uruguay; Eastern cancels flights from late January through April

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – American Airlines decided to suspend its operations between Miami and Montevideo on March 31 and will resume them next Saturday, December 18, with three weekly frequencies in a Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Departures from Montevideo will occur on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11:56 PM. Arrival in Miami is scheduled for 06.55 AM the following day. Departures from Miami will take place on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:13 PM. Arrival in Montevideo is scheduled for 08.12 AM the following day. American Airlines announced that it will operate this route until March 26, 2022.

According to the company’s website, a flight from Montevideo to Miami on American Airlines departing on Saturday, December 18 starts at US$1,776 in economy and US$4,297 in first class.

Eastern Airlines began operating in Uruguay on June 24 with direct flights between Montevideo and Miami. As of today, the company will operate two weekly flights: on Thursdays and Sundays from Miami to Montevideo and on Mondays and Fridays from Montevideo to Miami.

The company had planned to maintain these flights until April and then increase them to three weekly frequencies. However, the company announced that “due to operational issues” flights will be suspended from January 23 through April 10, 2022.

The company also reported that all affected passengers will have the option of rescheduling their flights or requesting a refund.

Operations will be resumed on April 10 with three weekly frequencies: Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from Miami to Montevideo, Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Montevideo to Miami.

The resumption of American Airlines flights contributes to increasing Uruguay’s air connectivity, a key factor for the economic recovery of the tourism sector.

Last Friday, December 3, Avianca also resumed operations between Montevideo and Bogota, from where passengers may connect to over 70 destinations in the continent. The airline is operating three weekly frequencies on Airbus A319 aircraft and with an offer of around 2,000 seats per month.

Low cost airlines such as JetSmart and Flybondi also recently announced the start of their operations in Uruguay. They will join Gol, Azul, Air France, KLM, Iberia, Air Europa, LATAM, Copa Airlines and Aerolíneas Argentinas.
