Amazon.com launches 1-day delivery in 50 cities in Brazil

By · August 4, 2021 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Amazon announced on Wednesday, August 4, that it will offer Prime service subscribers in Brazil the option to have products delivered within one business day. The service is available in more than 50 cities, said a company executive.

The announcement comes amid fierce competition, with rivals such as Mercado Livre, Magazine Luiza, and Americanas all investing heavily to increase delivery speed and win customers.

The initiative already exists for Prime subscribers in markets in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and comes two years after Prime was launched in Brazil.

Previously, Prime users in Brazil had access to free two-day shipping with the option to pay extra for one-day delivery.

“Last year, we developed better infrastructure, especially in the capital cities of the country with new distribution centers, and this is what helped make one-day delivery possible,” said Mariana Roth, Amazon Prime’s  head in Brazil. Roth did not specify how many new Prime users the initiative should attract, nor how much revenue it should generate for the company.

E-commerce competition is fierce in Brazil, which has about 105 million e-commerce shoppers.

Amazon ranked fourth in the country in terms of monthly site visits, behind regional and domestic competitors Mercado Livre, Americanas, and OLX, according to a ranking compiled by payments company Ebanx.

Logistics is an especially tricky piece in the broader Brazilian e-commerce game. Earlier this year, Mercado Livre announced an investment of R$10 (US$5) billion, much of it in logistics, in Brazil, where, as of June, it is offering same-day shipping in some cities.
