Alckmin announces first names of government transition team in Brazil with Tebet and Persio Arida

The vice-president-elect Geraldo Alckmin announced this Tuesday, Nov. 8, the first names of the government transition team of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, left).

Alckmin was appointed general coordinator of the team last week.

Economists André Lara Resende and Pérsio Arida, who formulated the Real Plan, have been confirmed as members of the technical group dealing with the economy.

Besides them, economists Guilherme Melo, who helped formulate da Silva’s government program, and Nelson Barbosa, former Finance Minister, will also be part of the team.

In social assistance, Alckmin announced Senator Simone Tebet, Márcia Lopes, Tereza Campello, and André Quintão.

There will be 31 technical groups responsible for public policy studies, data analysis, and action planning for the next government.

The team will work at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB), in Brasília, over the next two months.

Former minister Aloízio Mercadante will be the coordinator of the transition cabinet’s technical group, while the PT’s president, Gleisi Hoffmann, will coordinate political articulation.

Gleisi will be responsible for the relationship with parliamentarians, political parties, and civil society organizations.

Floriano Pesaro has been designated as the coordinator of the executive area. President Lula da Silva’s wife, Janja da Silva, will coordinate the inauguration organization.

“We will, every day, announce the nucleus that will organize the transition group. There is no limited number; there can be many more people,” said Alckmin at a press conference in Brasília.

The transition team will have representatives from all ten parties in the coalition that launched Lula da Silva to the presidency and other legends willing to act together with the elected government.

According to the vice president-elect, the names of the transition will not necessarily be part of ministries in the new government.

“They may participate, they may not participate, but they are quite distinct issues. This is a 50-day job,” he reinforced.

Alckmin signed three ordinances on Tuesday: the first to create the governmental transition cabinet, the second to appoint the coordinators, and the third to request reports from the Federal Audit Court (TCU).
