World Cup 2026 Egypt break a 92-year duck

Egypt recorded the first World Cup victory in their history, fighting back to beat New Zealand 3-1 at BC Place in Vancouver. It was a landmark night for a nation appearing at its fourth finals.

The Pharaohs had gone winless across their previous three World Cups, in 1934, 1990 and 2018. That barren run finally ended in Canada.

It did not come easily, with New Zealand striking first. Egypt’s response, though, was emphatic and ultimately comfortable.

Egypt were pioneers of the global game, becoming the first African and Arab side to play at a World Cup back in 1934. That debut ended in a single-game defeat to Hungary in the old straight-knockout format.

Their return in 1990 brought three creditable draws but no win and an early exit. In 2018 they lost all three matches, with Mohamed Salah carrying an injury into the tournament.

Salah leads the comeback

New Zealand led through Finn Surman, who headed in from a set piece in the 15th minute. The All Whites held that advantage until the interval.

Egypt levelled in the 58th minute when Mostafa Mohamed met a cross with a header. Nine minutes later Mohamed Salah swept in a left-footed finish to turn the game around.

Trezeguet then settled it in the 82nd minute with a diving header from a Salah corner. Salah finished with a goal and an assist on the night.

The comeback was built on Egypt’s growing control after the break. As New Zealand tired, the Pharaohs found space and belief in equal measure.

What the result means for Group G

According to FIFA’s official match centre, the win lifts Egypt to four points and top of Group G. They sit above Iran and Belgium, who drew 0-0 on the same day.

By The Rio Times’ reading of the table, the maths is now firmly in Egypt’s favour. From winless in three previous tournaments, they could reach the knockout stage with a draw in their final game.

That final fixture pits Egypt against Iran, with New Zealand left to face Belgium. A point against the Iranians would in all likelihood be enough.

Even a narrow defeat might not be fatal, depending on the other result. For now, Egypt hold the initiative and the better goal difference.

A different kind of Egypt

Egypt had drawn their opener 1-1 with Belgium, with Emam Ashour on the scoresheet. The performance hinted at progress without delivering the breakthrough.

Here the breakthrough arrived, built on patience and Salah’s quality in the final third. For a country whose World Cup story had been one of near misses, it was a genuine turning point.

Salah, one of the finest forwards of his generation, has carried Egyptian hopes for nearly a decade. A World Cup goal in open play, and a win to match, had long eluded him until now.

Why it matters

A first-ever win changes the mood around a squad that has long carried heavy expectations at home. It also keeps Africa’s strong showing at this expanded World Cup very much alive.

A record number of African teams reached this 48-nation tournament, and several have impressed. Egypt’s breakthrough adds another chapter to that story.

For New Zealand, the defeat is a setback but not yet fatal. The All Whites must now beat Belgium to have any chance of progressing.

They will rue conceding three times after such a promising start in Vancouver. Their fate, at least, remains in their own hands for the final round.
