Key Facts

World Cup 2026 Mexico: The hosts beat South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara to win Group A with a game to spare.

First through: Mexico became the first team to reach the Round of 32.

The goal: Luis Romo pounced on a Korean goalkeeping error just after half-time.

Late drama: Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced a stunning double save to protect the lead.

Form: It was Mexico’s third straight World Cup win, a first for the country.

It was not pretty, but it was ruthless: a single goal and a goalkeeping masterclass sent Mexico into the knockout rounds before anyone else, and turned Guadalajara into one long fiesta.

World Cup 2026 Mexico first into the Round of 32

Mexico became the first team to reach the knockout rounds of the World Cup, beating South Korea 1-0 at a packed Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. The win secured top spot in Group A with a match to spare.

For a nation that crashed out in the group stage in 2022, it was a moment of real release. Javier Aguirre’s side have now won both of their matches on home soil.

The victory also made history of a smaller kind. It was the first time Mexico have won three World Cup matches in a row.

A pre-match flyover and a roaring crowd set the tone in Zapopan, where tickets had been among the most sought-after of the group stage. The home support has become a genuine factor in this tournament.

Romo punishes a Korean error

The only goal arrived five minutes into the second half and owed much to misfortune for South Korea. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu came for a high ball and collided with a team-mate, spilling it into the six-yard box.

Luis Romo was the quickest to react, tapping into the empty net to send the stadium into raptures. There was a local flavour to it, too, with Romo a Chivas player on his home ground.

The goal came against the run of a first half that South Korea had largely shaded. Mexico emerged after the break with far more purpose and never looked back.

Rangel’s late heroics

Holding a slender lead, Mexico needed their goalkeeper at the death. Raúl Rangel, himself from Guadalajara, produced a remarkable double save in the closing minutes.

He first denied Cho Gue-sung from close range, then somehow recovered to keep out the rebound. It was the decisive intervention that preserved a second clean sheet in two games.

A grind, not a classic

In truth, the match was short on attacking quality. South Korea dominated the ball, with around 57 percent possession, but rarely tested Rangel until the late flurry.

Their captain Son Heung-min was quiet and was substituted just before the hour. Mexico’s best early moment was an Edson Álvarez clearance off the line to deny a Son lob.

This was tournament football of the pragmatic kind, built on discipline and game management. Aguirre will not mind one bit, given what it delivered.

Group A done, knockout looms

Mexico sit on six points from two games, clear at the top after South Africa and Czechia drew earlier in the day. Their final group game against Czechia in Mexico City is now a dead rubber.

Attention turns to the Round of 32, which Mexico will contest in Mexico City at the end of the month. Topping the group should hand them a kinder draw.

Why it matters

A host nation that began with a curse-breaking win has now booked its place in the last 32 at the first opportunity. The contrast with the 2022 disappointment could hardly be sharper.

The dream of finally reaching a fifth match, the long-discussed “quinto partido,” is suddenly alive and well. For now, a football-mad country can simply enjoy the ride.

Two games, two clean sheets and six points add up to close to a perfect start. Whether El Tri can carry that form deep into the knockouts is the question that will now build.
