Venezuela’s interim authorities have begun releasing detained Americans, a highly symbolic move that signals a possible shift after Nicolás Maduro was captured by U.S. forces on January 3, 2026.

People briefed on the matter said at least four U.S. citizens were freed on Tuesday, January 13, with another American reportedly released the day before.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that detained Americans had been released and framed it as an “important step” without providing names or a final count.

The releases arrived amid bold promises from National Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez, a central power broker in the new order.

In recent days, he has described a “significant” freeing of political detainees and has claimed more than 400 people have been released since December, including 116 in the latest wave. That is where the story turns from diplomacy to documentation.

Venezuela’s political prisoners test transparency

Venezuelan human-rights monitors and opposition leaders argue the official numbers are inflated or premature because lists are incomplete and families often receive little formal confirmation.

Foro Penal, which tracks detentions case by case, reported that Venezuela had 806 political prisoners as of January 5. Its tally included 105 women, 175 military detainees, and one adolescent.

Outside prisons, relatives describe a grinding limbo: days of waiting, partial information, and uncertainty over who has truly been released versus transferred.

Longstanding complaints about limited access to lawyers and medical care continue to hang over the system. Even the imagery is contested.

Social media has circulated dramatic “proof” photos of Maduro in custody, including a viral image later flagged as AI-generated. In today’s Venezuela, the politics of release is inseparable from the politics of verification.
