USA Legislator Urges Bolsonaros to Stay Out of American Elections
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs said on Monday, July 27th, that the Bolsonaros need to stay “out” of this year’s US elections. The demonstration, posted on social media, is signed by Eliot Engel, Committee Chairman.
A Democratic Party congressman, Engel criticized a video posted by Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro in which President Jair Bolsonaro’s son calls for “Trump 2020” when referring to the November election. With a Democratic majority, the Committee chaired by Engel is responsible for legislation and supervision of the country’s foreign policy.
In his reaction, Engel said that “we have seen this playbook before,” which he classified as “disgraceful and unacceptable”. “The Bolsonaro family needs to stay OUT of the US elections”, he concluded.
The Bolsonaro family has shown support for Trump on several occasions. President Jair Bolsonaro himself has publicly declared himself a fan of the American president and said he supports his re-election – a gesture that runs counter to the diplomatic tradition of avoiding involvement in domestic disputes.
The same line was adopted by Eduardo Bolsonaro, who last year was considered for an appointment as Brazilian ambassador in Washington. However, with no Senate support to endorse his name, Eduardo ultimately desisted from the nomination, which had been advocated by his father.
In an interview with Estadão newspaper this month, former White House National Security Advisor John Bolton assessed that if Brazil’s interest in its relationship with America is to be considered, President Jair Bolsonaro needs to “open communication lines” with the Democratic party in the US.
Currently, the Democratic candidate for the November elections, Joe Biden, leads the polls by eight percentage points.
