Threat of New AI-5 is Rebuffed by 96 Percent of Brazilians on Social Media

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The survey was conducted by Torabit, a digital monitoring platform. It analyzed some 100,000 comments on the repercussions of Eduardo Bolsonaro’s interview late Thursday afternoon, October 31st.

“Only two percent of comments are positive for the deputy. The same is the case (two percent) for neutral comments, in other words, those sharing news without value judgment,” the survey points out.

The AI-5 (Institutional Act Number Five – the harshest of all the dictatorship’s institutional decrees) is among the most commented subjects on Twitter since noon on Thursday. The reference has entered the Trending Topics Brazil 52 times and world trends twice.

At 3 PM, following the interview’s negative repercussions, the hashtag #DitaduraNuncaMais (“#DictatorshipNeverMore”) gained popularity, ranking second in the most discussed subjects in Brazil.

Ordinary users, digital influencers and politicians use the hashtag to criticize the deputy’s statement and also to call on the population to demonstrate. There are now dozens of events calling for demonstrations in Facebook groups.

Men and politicians

Men accounted for 63.2 percent of all mentions. The most pronounced states in networks were São Paulo (24.5 percent), Rio de Janeiro (19.9 percent), Minas Gerais (9 percent), the Federal District (5 percent), Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and Pernambuco, with 4.5 percent each.

A total of 125 of the 513 federal deputies have already voiced their opinions on the subject on social media. Alexandre Frota was the most active, with 16 posts on the subject on Twitter. “Among the 81 senators, 10 of them mentioned the statement by 5 PM,” says the study.
