Shift in Trade Dynamics: U.S. Now Top Export Destination for ASEAN, Overtaking China

A significant shift has occurred in ASEAN’s trade landscape, with the U.S. now eclipsing China as the primary export destination.

This change, marking the end of an 18-month trend, reflects a broader realignment in global supply dynamics.

Reports indicate that during the first quarter, ASEAN’s exports to the U.S. surged to $67.2 billion, surpassing the $57 billion directed toward China.

This growth is primarily fueled by the U.S.’s escalating demand for semiconductors, juxtaposed with China’s economic deceleration.

In Malaysia, exports to the U.S. have increased by 8%, contrasting starkly with a 3.3% decline in exports to China.

Experts attribute this shift to deep-seated structural changes and recent economic trends.

These include rising costs and geopolitical tensions, prompting U.S. firms to diversify their supply chains away from China, which benefits ASEAN economies like Malaysia.

Vietnam also showed notable performance, with 28% of its exports now heading to the U.S., significantly more than the 17% going to China.

In the first quarter alone, Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. rose by 24% to $25.7 billion, the highest among ASEAN nations.

This increase is credited to Vietnam’s competitive pricing in electronics and textiles, which align well with U.S. market demands. It is further propelled by ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions.

ASEAN’s Trade Dynamics

Thailand saw a 5.1% drop in exports to China, mainly due to lower demand for agricultural goods. However, exports to the U.S. saw a 9.8% increase.

Analysts from a local research center suggest that this could be indicative of a potential risk of deflation in China. Such a scenario would signal continued weak demand.

Additionally, ASEAN’s combined exports to China and Hong Kong amounted to $69.4 billion in early 2024.

Exports to Central Asia and Africa totaled $86.4 billion in 2021, down from $59 billion to the U.S. Hong Kong plays a critical role in these trade routes.

In short, the evolving trade scenario mirrors shifts in economic alliances. It also highlights strategic adjustments by ASEAN in response to a fluctuating global market.
