Santos decrees 3-day official mourning for Bruno Covas’ death

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The funeral ceremony will take place in the coastal city later this afternoon, where Covas will be laid to rest in his family’s tomb in the Paquetá cemetery, in a ceremony restricted to his family.

The city of Santos, where Bruno Covas was born, has declared a three-day mourning period in honor of the Mayor of São Paulo.

City Mayor Rogério Santos (PSDB) expressed his regret over Covas’ death on Sunday morning. “Bruno Covas leaves us a legacy of leadership, competence and courage. A talented young Santos native, who faced his illness with his head held high, with transparency and determination,” he said in a statement.

Rogério Santos continued his praise for the Mayor, and also compared him to his grandfather, ex-governor of São Paulo, Mário Covas.

“A public manager who mirrored the example of his grandfather, Mário Covas, never abandoned his public duties because he understood that the search for the common good is permanent,” and added: “Bruno leaves us an example of overcoming, of admirable public spirit, and of love for life and for people. I express my condolences to the family, to his son and great companion Tomás, and to his friends and admirers.”

Covas died on Sunday morning at the age of 41. He had been fighting cancer since November 2019 that initially affected his digestive tract. In recent weeks, tests detected new tumors in his liver, pelvis structure, and spine.
