Why we picked it: Monday is the original night at Pedra do Sal — and the best. What began as a gathering for working musicians who played all weekend and had only Mondays free has become one of the most celebrated cultural events in Rio, running for over 18 years without interruption.

A mesão is set up at the foot of the historic stone staircase in the Saúde neighbourhood — the heart of “Pequena África,” where carioca samba was born — and musicians rotate through instruments, singing without microphones while the amplified accompaniment carries across the Largo João da Baiana.

On the Monday before Carnaval week, expect the energy to be at a fever pitch: the regulars, the tourists, the baianas de acarajé, the caipirinha vendors and the whole community singing along to deep-cut samba de raiz. This is Rio at its most essential.

Practicalities: Arrive by 19h for a good spot — the stone steps fill fast. Beer vendors operate on a ficha system (3 fichas for ~R$10). The closest metro stations are Uruguaiana and Carioca; walk from Carioca for a safer route via Av. Rio Branco. The event is weather-dependent — heavy rain may cancel. Use ride-hailing for the return; avoid walking alone after midnight.

Why we picked it: For nearly two decades, every Monday afternoon at the Renascença Clube in Andaraí has belonged to Moacyr Luz and his Samba do Trabalhador.

The concept is simple and profound: a roda for the musicians who work all weekend and only have Monday to sit, play and listen.

What started as a private gathering now draws hundreds — from Zona Norte regulars to visiting diplomats — all seated around a raised tablado where Moacyr and his band (Daniel Neves on 7-string, Gabriel Cavalcante on cavaco, Mingo Silva on pandeiro, and more) play deep samba de raiz: compositions by Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho, Paulinho da Viola and their own songbook.

The Renascença itself is historic — a black-founded social club from the era when Zona Norte clubs refused entry to Black cariocas. On the Monday before Carnaval week, surprise guests are virtually guaranteed. Family-friendly, all ages.

Practicalities: Tickets on Sympla or at the door. The club is in Andaraí, Zona Norte — take a taxi or ride-hail from Zona Sul (~25 min). The closest metro station is São Francisco Xavier or Saens Peña, both a short ride away. Food and drinks available on-site. The club’s capacity is reduced due to ongoing renovations — arrive early.

Why we picked it: Every Monday since October, the Paraíso do Tuiuti — one of the Grupo Especial’s most exciting schools — has taken over the Campo de São Cristóvão for its ensaio de rua.

This is likely the final Monday rehearsal before the school’s official desfile on the Sapucaí (Tuesday, 17 February). The samba-enredo “Lonã Ifá Lukumi” — an exploration of Afro-Cuban spirituality and the Ifá tradition — has been widely praised as one of the strongest of Carnaval 2026.

Intérprete Pixulé leads the canto with remarkable power, the bateria Super Som under mestre Marcão is in top form, and the community sings with the intensity of a school preparing for glory. Rainha de bateria Mayara Lima has gone viral this season for her samba no pé. Free, open-air, and electric.

Practicalities: Concentration at 20h in front of the Colégio Pedro II, Campo de São Cristóvão. The school parades through the neighbourhood streets — follow the crowd and the bateria. The nearest metro is São Cristóvão. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water. The rehearsal runs approximately three hours.

Why we picked it: The Rio Scenarium is a Lapa institution — a 19th-century casarão on Rua do Lavradio housing seven environments across three floors, stuffed with antique curiosities and live Brazilian music every night.

Named among the world’s top bars by The Guardian, the Scenarium hosts rotating acts that span samba, chorinho, gafieira and MPB, with Monday programming that often features up-and-coming bands alongside established session players.

In the week before Carnaval, the house typically runs pré-Carnaval specials. It is the anchor of Lapa’s Rua do Lavradio strip and the best starting point for a Monday night in the neighbourhood.

Practicalities: Opens from 19h on weekdays. Check the venue’s Instagram (@rioscenarium) for the specific Monday lineup. Cover charge varies by act. Drinks and full dinner menu available. The Scenarium fills up — arrive early or expect to wait. Located on Rua do Lavradio, walkable from metro Cinelândia or Carioca.
