Petrobras Brings Tupi Back To The 1-Million-Barrel-A-Day Club

Petrobras says the Tupi field in the Santos Basin pre-salt has climbed back above 1 million barrels of oil per day, restoring a production level first reached in 2019 and later lost as decline set in.

The company says it hit the mark on Friday, January 9, 2026, after connecting 11 wells during 2025 and bringing the total drilled in the asset to about 150.

Chief executive Magda Chambriard described the rebound as a turnaround for a former national flagship that had been overtaken by the newer Búzios field.

The story is less about a fresh discovery and more about execution: new well tie-ins, reservoir management, and the steady optimization that separates a plateau from a slide in ultradeepwater projects.

The stakes are national. Petrobras says the pre-salt now accounts for roughly 80% of its output. Of the 57 production platforms it operates, 28 are dedicated exclusively to the pre-salt.

Pre-salt output drives investment confidence

The company also says cumulative pre-salt production surpassed 7 billion barrels in January 2025, led by Tupi, Búzios and Mero, underlining how offshore performance feeds exports, fiscal revenue and dividends.

But “more Tupi” is not a unilateral decision. The field is operated by Petrobras with major partners Shell and Galp, and expansion steps typically require partner alignment and approvals from Brazil’s regulator, the ANP.

Petrobras has signaled it is studying additional wells, evaluating a potential new floating production unit from 2031, and extending the life of some of the nine existing units.

The timing matters politically. Strong output and operational delivery bolster the case for predictable rules, investment discipline and returns. It also narrows the room for experiments that treat Petrobras as a catch-all policy tool.

For a company that lives in global capital markets, Tupi’s comeback is a reminder that performance, not slogans, is what keeps the lights on.
