Rio Hosts Tiradentes Cultural Street Market this Saturday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Saturday, August 5th, the Tiradentes square in Centro hosts the “Tiradentes Cultural” street market. From 1PM to 8PM, this month’s edition includes book releases, art exhibitions, organic food stalls and a debate circle on the Olympic legacy.

Opening the event, at the stall of “Baía Viva” (Bay Alive) social movement, will be the release of two recently published books on the Guanabara Bay’s history and ecosystem, written by geographer Elmo Amador.

Also starting at 1PM is the agro-ecological food market, where producers from all over Rio’s Metropolitan region offer a variety of organic fresh and home made products like cakes, cookies and sweets, until 5PM.

Artistic performances will happen from 1:30 PM with Flavia Meireles and Urutau Guajajara, from the Guajajara indigenous ethnicity, from Maranhão (Brazil’s North). Through performances, story-telling, body painting and singing, the artists aspire to share the indigenous traditional wisdom and reflections on the contemporary world.

DJ Calani will spin a set list of Brazilian music at the square from 1PM to 3PM, while children and teenagers can participate in playful activities until 5PM, like an art workshop with fabric and a fashion show. Story-telling and music sessions will be run by group Passarinharte until 2PM in the stall “10apegos” (detachments), where children can do book exchanges.

The debate “Rio 2016+1: onde estamos e para onde vamos?” will reflect on the Olympic legacy to Rio’s citizens at 3PM. Participating in the discussion will be Paula Camargo, Tiradentes Cultural’s representative; Thelma Vilas Boas and Cesar Jordão, from Saracura’s education and art project; Victor Oliveira, from Streetfootball World’s social organization; and Sergio Ricardo, representing Baía Viva’s social movement.

The debate will be followed by the release of the documentary “A Agenda por uma Baía de Guanabara Viva” (The agenda for an alive Guanabara Bay) and the exhibition of Flavio Abreu’s short film “Guanabara 16”, on the civil society’s movement to support the Guanabara Bay’s preservation.

Among the musical attractions, the highlight is Californian singer Jessie Evans, who will perform at 6PM. The São Paulo resident will present her authentic Afrobeat and New Wave compositions. DJs Diogo Stausz and Rodrigo Peirão open the show with diverse Brazilian rythms, while DJ MAM leads the pick ups after Evans’ show, spinning trap, dubstep, moombahton, raggamuffin, amongst other genres.

A wide variety of culinary stalls will be present during the entire event, with menus that include sweets, burgers, vegan food and home made beers. Sucos Q Beleza’s natural juices, Malte Carioca’s beers, Churras Bike da Anles’ barbecue, Ceviche Rj’s Peruvian ceviche, Santi Veganos’ vegan dishes and Coisas do Nordeste’s regional Northeastern food are some of the options one will find at Tiradentes Cultural.
