Relatives of Nicaraguan dissident sentenced to long prison terms
The regime of Daniel Ortega sentenced on Thursday to long sentences three relatives of dissident Javier Alvarez, a political persecuted of the regime.
This is the first sentence issued by the Sandinista justice system against relatives of an opponent of the Nicaraguan regime.
Alvarez’s wife, Jeannine Horvilleur, 63 years old, received an 8-year prison sentence.
The same sentence was imposed on their daughter, Ana Carolina Álvarez.
The dissident’s son-in-law, Félix Roiz, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The three relatives of the dissident were arrested last September in Managua when the Sandinista repressive forces went to Alvarez’s residence to try to arrest him.
However, by that time he had already left the Central American country, going into exile in Costa Rica.
These people were then charged with “conspiracy to undermine the national identity” and “propagation of false news”.
These generic crimes have been used by the regime’s repressive machinery, including arresting and accusing members of the Catholic Church who are uncomfortable.
In recent months Ortega has added to his repressive modalities a new one consisting of imprisoning the relatives of those who dare to criticize him.
