Putin Seeks Trump’s Recognition of Russian-Controlled Ukrainian Territories

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants U.S. President Donald Trump to formally recognize Russia’s annexation of five Ukrainian regions. Russian business newspaper Kommersant revealed this development through sources present at a closed-door meeting with Russian business elites.

Putin specifically requests American recognition of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea as Russian territory. Russia formally annexed the first four regions in September 2022, while Crimea fell under Russian control in 2014.

The Russian leader reportedly offers a significant concession in return. Putin would commit not to claim Odessa, Ukraine’s vital Black Sea port, or additional Ukrainian territories if recognition happens soon.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed Putin discussed Ukraine during Tuesday’s business meeting. He denied that Putin and Trump addressed territorial recognition during their recent phone conversation.

Ukrainian officials express serious concerns about these developments. Aides to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fear Trump might entertain Putin’s territorial demands. Their anxiety grew after Trump indicated plans to discuss “land” in future talks with Putin.

The territories hold immense strategic and economic value. Crimea houses Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and vital ports. Donetsk and Luhansk contain valuable industrial infrastructure and coal reserves. Zaporizhzhia hosts Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Trump-Putin Talks Signal Shift in U.S. Ukraine Policy

Trump’s approach marks a shift from previous U.S. policy toward Ukraine. He announced in February that he and Putin agreed to begin negotiations on ending the war following a prisoner exchange.

Prisoner swaps have become an important diplomatic channel during the conflict. Russia and Ukraine recently exchanged 175 prisoners of war, including 22 severely wounded Ukrainian soldiers who received urgent medical care upon return.

The United Arab Emirates played a key role in mediating these exchanges. Ukrainian President Zelensky described this swap as one of the largest, highlighting the return of “warriors severely wounded and those persecuted for fabricated crimes.”

For Ukraine, losing formal recognition of these territories would devastate their sovereignty and economic future. The outcome of these negotiations could reshape Eastern Europe’s geopolitical landscape for decades.
