Peru: Castillo, transferred by helicopter to the same prison where Fujimori is

Peru experienced a long day this Wednesday that began with the attempted coup by Pedro Castillo, who announced the closure of the Legislature, and was subsequently dismissed by Congress in a process that only lasted a few minutes.

Faced with his escape attempt, which according to the media was destined for the Mexican Embassy in Lima, Castillo was detained by the Police and taken to the Prefectural headquarters in Lima where he remained for several hours to be questioned and to initiate the judicial investigative process.

All this, while Congress complied with the constitutional succession and swore in Vice President Dina Boluarte as the new head of state.

Already at night, the ex-president -who will be prosecuted for rebellion and conspiracy- left the police headquarters accompanied by a strong police operation to later be transferred by helicopter to the Directorate of Special Police Operations (Diroes) where is located the Barbadillo prison, in the Lima district of Ate.

Former President Alberto Fujimori, who is serving his 25-year prison sentence, is also being held there.

In the last hours of Wednesday, several teams from the Prosecutor’s Office carried out simultaneous operations in various government premises such as the Government Palace, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and other ministries in search of evidence against Castillo.

The Public Ministry itself reported through Twitter that the objective is to “gather elements of conviction regarding the investigation of the former president” for the alleged commission of the crime of rebellion.
