Oil Prices Under Pressure Amid Supply and Demand Uncertainty
Oil markets opened the week on a cautious note as prices edged lower, reflecting a mix of supply concerns and weak demand signals. Brent crude traded at $74.24 per barrel, down 0.3%, while WTI crude fell 0.4% to $70.20 per barrel.
The weekend brought developments that could reshape the market, including the potential resumption of Kurdistan’s oil exports and mixed global economic indicators. Kurdistan’s oil exports, halted since March 2023, are set to restart next month following a budget amendment by Iraq’s parliament.
The semi-autonomous region plans to resume shipping approximately 400,000 barrels per day through Turkey, a move expected to ease financial strains in both Erbil and Baghdad.
However, the pipeline infrastructure requires repairs after two years of inactivity, which may delay full capacity restoration. Analysts suggest this additional supply could weigh on prices if global demand remains tepid.
Geopolitical factors added further complexity. Ukrainian drone strikes on a Russian oil pumping station disrupted flows through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium by up to 40%, removing an estimated 380,000 barrels per day from global markets.
Meanwhile, peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have raised speculation about potential sanctions relief for Russian oil exports. This has created uncertainty over future supply levels.
Oil Market Faces Pressure from Weak Demand
On the demand side, weak U.S. economic data has dampened sentiment. A slowdown in the U.S. services sector raised fears of reduced energy consumption in the world’s largest oil consumer.
In contrast, China’s industrial activity is expected to pick up in the coming weeks, but it has yet to offset bearish trends. Market participants are also closely watching OPEC+ policies.
The group plans to unwind 2.2 million barrels per day of production cuts starting in April. However, speculation about delaying these increases persists as members assess market conditions.
OPEC+ compliance with output targets remains strong overall, though some producers like Iraq and Kazakhstan have exceeded quotas. Technical analysis shows Brent faces resistance at $75 per barrel, with support at $73.85. WTI hovers near critical support at $70, with further downside risks if this level breaks.
ETF flows reflect investor caution; energy funds saw reduced inflows last week as traders reassessed risks tied to supply disruptions and economic uncertainty. Speculative positions in ICE Brent also declined by 24,000 lots, signaling bearish sentiment.
The market remains finely balanced between supply risks and demand concerns. Traders are focused on upcoming geopolitical developments and OPEC+ decisions for clarity on price direction.
