Lula Government puts pornography alongside religion as a threat to the Yanomami tribes

By · February 9, 2023 · 2 min read

Through a joint ordinance between the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai) and the Special Secretariat of Indigenous Health (SESAI) linked to the Ministry of Health, the Lula government listed pornography alongside religion as a threat to the Yanomami people.

The recommendation is part of a series of regulations established by the organs for non-indigenous access to Yanomami land.

The ordinance was published in the Diário Oficial da União (DOU) on February 1.

“It is recommended that non-indigenous people avoid wearing clothing, objects, or media of pornographic, racist, or religious connotation.”

“Bathing clothes or other intimate items should also be avoided in the villages, even when bathing in the rivers. It is forbidden to sexually harass indigenous people or accept any harassment, even with their consent,” says the text.

To gain access to indigenous lands, it is also necessary to present proof of up-to-date vaccination, and it is forbidden to distribute foodstuffs rich in sugar, oil, and salt to the indigenous people.

Last Monday (Feb. 6), the Minister of Justice and Public Safety, Flavio Dino (PSB-MA), said that the government expects that by the end of this week, 80% of the people involved in illegal mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land in Roraima will have left.

On Tuesday (Feb. 7), the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) reopened the airspace over Yanomami land in Roraima to allow the peaceful departure of illegal miners.
