Lavrov Warns Europe’s Peacekeeper Proposals Risk Escalation with Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov strongly rejected European proposals to deploy peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, warning such actions would escalate the conflict into direct warfare between NATO and Russia.

Speaking in Moscow on March 6, Lavrov labeled the idea as a blatant provocation, stating, “No matter what flags they fly—EU or national—it will still be NATO troops.” He emphasized that Moscow views any foreign military presence in Ukraine as an act of war, leaving no room for compromise.

Lavrov specifically criticized French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for advancing these proposals. Macron has suggested a phased plan, starting with a one-month ceasefire covering air and energy infrastructure, followed by deploying European peacekeepers.

Starmer proposed forming a “coalition of the willing” to enforce peace in Ukraine. Lavrov accused Macron of reigniting imperialist ambitions, comparing his rhetoric to Napoleon and Hitler. He argued that Europe’s actions stem from deep-seated animosity toward Russia, warning they risk severe retaliation.

Kremlin Warns Against Western Escalation in Ukraine

The Kremlin has consistently framed the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war with NATO, citing Western military aid and sanctions as efforts to weaken Russia. Lavrov’s comments come as European leaders meet in Brussels to discuss defense spending and Ukraine’s future.

While Macron and Starmer push for intervention, internal divisions persist within the EU. Countries like Hungary oppose escalating tensions, advocating negotiations instead.

Deploying peacekeepers would require significant resources—up to 100,000 troops—and U.S. backing, which remains unlikely. U.S. President Donald Trump has shown little interest in supporting European-led initiatives, aligning more closely with Moscow’s stance.

As Russian forces advance along Ukraine’s eastern frontlines, Europe’s hardline approach risks provoking further backlash from Moscow. Lavrov’s warnings underscore the high stakes of escalating tensions. They highlight the need for clear strategies to manage the consequences for regional stability and security.
